Canadian Man Killed in Multi-Vehicle Crash in Yemassee

Whenever the weather gets bad, the roads in South Carolina get dangerous. Just because it isn’t sleet or snow doesn’t mean it doesn’t make the roads slick and slippery. When people are out and about trying to get their holiday shopping done like they were last weekend, things can get hairy. This is exactly what happened on Interstate-95 Sunday morning.

At about 11:30 am, a U-Haul truck was involved in a crash with two other vehicles on the Southbound lanes of the Interstate. The U-Haul ended up going off the road toward the right shoulder. It fell into a ravine or embankment and ended up backwards. The man driving the U-Haul sadly didn’t survive his injuries. He was pronounced dead on the scene by the Hampton County coroner’s office.

The identity of the man driving the U-Haul couldn’t be determined for two days. It wasn’t until today that the police were able to identify the victim. It was a man from Canada. His name was Richard Frantel and he was 49 years old. The identities of the other people involved in the crash have not been released. Nor have their medical conditions.

The crash was so serious that it took almost 6 hours for the authorities to clean up the road. In fact, the Southbound lanes were closed until about 5 pm. There had already been one crash on the Northbound lanes. So, for a few hours, both sides of the highway were closed.

The crash happened at mile marker 37. It was raining pretty hard at the time of the crash. And while weather may have been a factor, the investigation is still ongoing.
